arete Australia was engaged under a Design and Construct contract to restore the ANZ Gothic Bank Branch and Museum at 388 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Our team meticulously restored the interior of this flagship bank to its former glory, while seamlessly integrating a modern banking facility.

Key highlights of the restoration include the unveiling and rejuvenation of the original mosaic tiles from 1887 and the innovative conversion of the banking counter joinery into contemporary museum displays.

Scope of works included:

  • Dismantling the original 1880s timber banking counter for reuse in new museum joinery
  • Refurbishing 1880s mosaic tiles, replacing 30% with heritage-approved products
  • Installing museum-grade joinery for ANZ’s artifact collection on public display
  • Integrating a new lighting control system with existing infrastructure
  • Templating and installing 24-karat gold leaf gilding to match original works

This project blends heritage preservation with contemporary design, inviting visitors to engage with interactive exhibits, appreciate historical artifacts, and explore the rich history of the Australia & New Zealand Banking Group as they approach 200 years of community support.
