arete Australia partnered with the City of Boroondara to deliver the extension and refurbishment of the Balwyn Library at 336 Whitehorse Road, Balwyn. This project focused on enhancing the library’s functionality and sustainability while preserving key architectural features.
The works included the addition of a light-filled atrium and the construction of a new first-floor level dedicated to staff areas and offices. The ground floor underwent significant transformation, with the demolition and reconstruction of the lobby, library, study, meeting, and amenity areas.
Notable features of the redevelopment include an innovative roof cooling system supplied by new rainwater tanks, a green roof above the library, the restoration of external timber shading, and the reinstatement of the original timber ceiling lining.
Completed in March 2018, this project has revitalised the library, offering an improved community space while integrating environmentally sustainable elements.
